Benefits from the dinner will fund the development of eye drops for macular degeneration, designed at VHIR

On November 9, Hotel Catalonia Berna hosted the 10th edition of "http://www.b1b2b3.org/news/es/2013/10/07/0001/la-nit-de-la-visio-2013-cena-benefica-de-la-associacio-discapacitat-visual-catalunya-b1-b2-b3" 'La Nit de la Visió', a dinner in which participated more than 120 people with the aim at raising funds and resources for research in preventable blindness. The organization raised 2,000 euros that will fund a "http://www.btv.cat/btvnoticies/2013/11/10/un-equip-de-vall-dhebron-investiga-un-nou-tractament-per-a-la-degeneracio-macular/" project for the development of eye drops for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), led by Dr. Miguel Ángel Zapata, researcher from the Ophthalmology group at Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), in collaboration with the Catalan biopharmaceutical company BCN Peptides. AMD is one of the main causes of blindness among adults in developed countries, and the main cause of blindness in people older than 65. There are treatments available for the early stages that slow down the disease, but must be injected through the eye, at least once a month. To improve the quality of life of patients and to prevent new cases of blindness, VHIR researchers are developing these eye drops whose first results in vitro where presented in the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Congress, hosted on May in Washington, the United States. For Dr. Zapata, who is now carrying out the in vivo process, initiatives such as 'La Nit de la Visió', organized by the Catalan Association of Visual Disability, "are very important because patients get engaged with our research and the development of new drugs, in a moment where we can’t only depend on public calls". The owners of the prestigious Catalan restaurant 'El Celler de Can Roca' participated in the dinner providing tasty fresh desserts.
