Dr. Josep Gamez: Nous tractaments per l'ELA

16/06/2017

The meeting, of a clinical and research nature, comes this year with interesting news regarding the treatments for this neurodegenerative disease.

Vall d'Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus hosts on 19 June a day on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, on the occasion of the World Day of ALS, on 21 June. The gathering, clinical and research based, comes this year with interesting developments regarding treatments for this neurodegenerative disease. It is about two new drugs that are currently undergoing clinical trial. The ALS Multidisciplinary Unit of Vall d'Hebron has participated in the development of one of these drugs. Both have proven to be able to slow the progression of the disease, a good starting point to achieve a world free of this disease. The lack of resources for research and patient care in multidisciplinary specialized units, as well as the lack of interest from pharmaceutical companies, have been the main obstacles to progress in the treatment of ALS. As explained by Dr. Josep Gamez, coordinator of the unit and the http://bit.ly/2r2eGBe" research group of the Peripheral Nervous System at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), "we will strive to get more funding for research, to develop strategic alliances with other laboratories and ensure that the progress in the treatment of ALS is implemented as quickly and efficiently as possible." Currently, the unit coordinated by Dr. Gamez follows 150 patients and participates in two clinical studies. This year, the conference will also focus on sport as a risk factor in ALS, the presence of a special guest, http://bit.ly/2sbeJPk" Toni Garcia, anty, trained professional footballer in the youth ranks of FC Barcelona and football coach at Brafa School in Nou Barris, Barcelona. He will be accompanied by the one who was his coach, Carles Rexach, former coach of Barça, and Ignasi Valls, director of the Sports School Brafa.ALS is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressive loss of muscle and its paralysis. Life expectancy for almost 4,000 people suffering from this disease in Catalonia is less than five years, but can be extended if you choose to receive mechanical ventilation and enteral nutrition.See the images/content/cartell_II_Jornada_ELA.pdf" Day Event Program.Video https://youtu.be/vLS00M155To" Event Opnening.Video presentation by Dr. Josep Gamez: https://youtu.be/tLSUh_zs9nA" New treatments for ALS.
