The plenary discussions covered strategy and goals, ongoing platform activities in platform meetings, and served to assess the current state of the art in four emerging technology areas of relevance to translational research.

Last week met together at Hotel Alimara in Barcelona for the first time the five platforms of the European Infrastructure for Translational Medicine (EATRIS). Hosted by Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), as the Spanish Scientific Coordinator of EATRIS, the plenary discussions covered strategy and goals, ongoing platform activities in platform meetings, and served to assess the current state of the art in four emerging technology areas of relevance to translational research.During the opening of the meeting Dr. Vicenç Martínez Ibáñez, General Manager at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, said that the fact of hosting this meeting means that "VHIR represents the future, innovation and the most important international example of Vall d'Hebron because we believe in Europe and we want to be one of the top hospitals in Europe during the next five years". Dr. Joan Comella, VHIR's Director and Spanish Scientific Coordinator of EATRIS, assured the projects of this European infrastructure ultimately will result "in faster arrival to the market and the patients of new biomedical innovations". Linking with Vall d'Hebron aims, he remembered that EATRIS "is working for the future generations, for our children and, as VHIR's motto says in our new Strategic Plan 2016-20, the research of today will be the medicine of tomorrow". Alfonso Beltrán, Deputy General Director of International Research Programs and Institutional Relations of the Health Institute Carlos III (ISCiii), explained the importance of the Spanish participation in EATRIS.Before the discussion between platforms, Dr. Joan Ignasi Esteban Mur, head of the research line on hepatitis C of the Liver Diseases Research Group at VHIR, Professor of Medicine and Chief of Clinical Hepatology Unit of HUVH made the Key Note Opening Lecture about the new advances in virology and Precision Medicine.Led by Giovanni Migliaccio, the Scientific Director of EATRIS, the multi-disciplinary composition and varied agenda of the meeting was very popular with the platform members.
