Cardiovascular Diseases

Cardiovascular Diseases group is a translational research group within the Cardiology Department of Vall d’Hebron Hospital that performs laboratory, clinical and epidemiological research. In the CIBERCV network we are within the topic of descriptor 2 “Arterial disease, thrombosis and myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury”. Our contributions in these topics address the following lines:

  • Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (i.e. mechanisms of endogenous cardioprotection, ischemic conditioning and remodeling),
  • Coronary artery disease (i.e. genetic factors involved in coronary artery disease, determinants of thrombotic complications and prognosis),
  • Aortic diseases (i.e. determinants of aorta dilatation, aortic biomechanics abnormalities in Marfan´s syndrome, and new imaging methods),
  • Congenital/familiar heart diseases (i.e. genetic determinants and prognosis factors).

In the CIBERESP network, our group is interested in the study of effectiveness/cost-effectiveness of cardiovascular interventions, health outcome research and methods in clinical research. The group has 19 principal investigators, 32 active projects and clinical trial and has been done 142 publications in 2020.

The European project, in which Vall d'Hebron participates, will favor personalized diagnosis and innovative therapeutic strategies in patients with the disease.

In total, different projects of six research groups will be promoted, focusing on precision medicine and advanced therapies.

The Cardiovascular Diseases and Neurovascular Diseases groups at VHIR will investigate new therapeutic strategies for heart failure, nanomedicine in stroke and the prevention of cardiovascular toxicity in the case of oncological treatments.
