General Surgery

The research group in General Surgery aims to develop research activities in the field of Surgery from the most clinical and surgical aspects related to the quality of care to the most basic and translational aspects of etiopathogenesis, pathophysiology and the bases of the diseases included in its different areas of interest, as well as in the therapeutic procedures to address them. It is focused in several topics that include the fields of Abdominal Wall Surgery, biomaterials and bioengineering, Colorectal Surgery and Proctology, General Endocrine, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, Esophagogastric Surgery, and Thoracic Surgery. It includes clinical surgeons who make up the care teams of the various clinical lines and includes a basic research laboratory with two researchers with special interest in the study of the extracellular matrix and inflammation and biomaterials and their integration.

Thoracic Surgery

Research focus

The thoracic surgery research group is dedicated to provide the finest in clinical care, education and research in this surgery specialty to ultimately improve patients’ outcomes and quality of life. To this aim, technological improvements are combined with experimental and clinical research, with a special interest in lung transplantation

Sub-lines:

Clinical research

Humoral rejection in lung transplantation (Irene Bello Rodríguez, coordinator): To understand humoral forms of rejection in human lung transplantation to eventually develop therapies that extend long-term patients’ survival.

Experimental research

Air leakage prevention (Alberto Jáuregui Abularach, coordinator): To contribute to the design and evaluation of new patches and treatments used as a reinforcement or repair material in thoracic surgery, to eventually reduce lung air leakage and improve clinical outcomes. To this aim a new sheep-based surgically induced experimental model has been developed.

Thoracic sympathetic clipping (Javier Pérez Vélez, coordinator): Development of a swine model to perform clipping, unclipping and extirpation of different segments of the sympathetic chain.

Lung transplantation (Iker López Sánz, coordinator): Development of a rat model to perform lung transplantation for teaching and research purposes.
