The scientific structure of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) is based on an organizational model designed to foster clinical and translational research, innovation, and knowledge transfer, with a direct impact on people's health.

This model is organized around five Research Areas, which form the institute's structural framework and bring together its 63 research groups according to specialized fields of expertise. This organization enables a clearer identification of scientific expertise by:

• Strengthening synergies among research groups.
• Facilitating a coordinated response to major health challenges.
• Promoting alignment with the clinical and strategic priorities of Vall d'Hebron University Hospital.

The scientific structure is complemented by the Pediatric and Perinatal Research Hub, the COREs, and the Programmes.

The Pediatric and Perinatal Research Hub integrates research from the prenatal period through adolescence and promotes continuity of care into adulthood. Its mission is to advance the generation and transfer of knowledge to improve the health and quality of life of children and adolescents, consolidating VHIR as a leading institution in this field.

COREs (Collaborative Research Strategic Spaces) are flexible, cross-cutting research environments that foster collaboration in priority and emerging scientific areas. Aligned with the institute's strategy and the European Commission's missions, they create new opportunities for high-impact research and strengthen VHIR's scientific competitiveness.

Programmes promote interdisciplinary collaboration in cross-cutting fields of particular interest, such as research incorporating a gender and diversity perspective, as well as the application of robotic surgery and simulation.
