Ferran Pellisé Uriquiza

I was trained as an orthopedic surgeon at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona and obtained a PhD “cum laude” in 1994. Since 1995 I am entirely dedicated to the surgical treatment of spinal disorders with special interest in scoliosis and other spinal deformities. I am the Chief of Spine Surgery at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Head of the Spine Research Group at Vall Hebron Institut de Recerca (VHIR), Director of the Spine Service at Hospital Quirón Barcelona and Professor of Orthopedics with Tenure at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona.

I have published over 180 peer-review papers, have an h-index of 39 and 6054 citations. My research work in spinal deformity has won (twice) the prestigious Hibbs award and the Whitecloud award from the Scoliosis Research Society, as well as the Best Paper Award from EuroSpine-The Spine Society of Europe, the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, BASS-British Association of Spinal Surgeons and GEER-The Spanish Spine Society. I serve on the boards of several scholarly journals and have been Deputy-Editor of the European Spine Journal between 2005 and 2015. I have served on the boards of different medical associations including the Spanish Spine Society (President), the Spine Society of Europe (President) and the Scoliosis Research Society (Director at Large and Secretary).
In 2011, I founded the European Spine Study Group (ESSG) together with other well-known researchers in the field of adult spinal deformities. Nowadays the ESSG is the main platform for the analysis and evaluation of adult spinal deformities in Europe.

Research lines

Adult Spinal Deformity

Highly prevalent pathology linked to population ageing. Since 2010, the VH Spine Research Unit is coordinating the unique European multicenter and prospective study and database for ASD called European Spine Study Group (ESSG). Database includes more than 1.000 patients treated in leading European spine units (Madrid, Bordeaux, Zurich, Ankara, Istanbul).

Main research goals are:

1) Identify predictive factors in heath related quality of life measures (SF36, SRS-22, ODI, VAS). Compare clinical and radiographic features and outcomes at baseline and follow up visits of non-operative and operative patients.

2) Assessment of peri-operative complications and risks in adult deformity surgery. Stratify or score the risk benefit ratio to produce an algorithm for surgical treatment. Limited available information in the field, results are expected to be highly relevant and necessary to establish treatment guidelines.

Spinal Tumours and fractures

Multicentric international clinical and radiographic database of patients sustaining non-osteoporotic spinal fractures or spinal bone tumors.

The main research goals are:

1) Defining radiological outcomes after surgical treatment of thoracolumbar spinal fractures, specially focused on short segment posterior fixation.

2) Analysis of the decision making process on the treatment of spinal metastases. Relevance of spinal instability on the decision-making.
