Zaida Soler Luque

Nowadays I am focusing on my thesis in the field of medicine at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). I aim to explore the complex interplay between diet and microbiota and its relationship with health. To do so, is essential to characterize first what is called a “healthy microbiota” and the factors that affect its shape. In that line of research, I am currently involved in an observational study using healthy volunteers from Barcelona and surroundings in which information about diet and samples are recovered using our laboratory self-developed food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and sample kits. Additionally I collaborate in other research lines such as vaginal microbiome and microbiome profile in Covid19 positive patients.

In 2019 I completed the Degree in Biotechnology in a group of High Academic Performance and in 2020 the Master in Translational Biomedical Research, both studied mostly in English, focusing mainly into the branch of Animal and Human.

In terms of experience, I have had the opportunity to volunteer with various labs. During 2017 I helped for a month at the COMAV in Valencia in routine procedures such as DNA extraction, database search, etc.

In 2019 I also had the opportunity to help for 1 month in the Microbiology laboratory at the Uniwersytet Rzeszowski in Poland. Once I came back, I began to develop my TFG at the University Institute of Animal Science and Technology for 6 months with the aim of studying the relationship between inflammation and the diet of Dicentrarchus labrax with different levels of animal protein substitution.

Finally in 2020 and until today I have been working at the VHIR, specifically in the Digestive Metagenomics Laboratory. My thesis focus on studying the relationship between the microbiota and different food groups and how these parameters can influence our health.

The study also linked improved microbiota diversity to better liver function.

This work sets the basis for future research aimed at a deeper understanding of the microbiota and the effect of nutrition.

These are the results of a study published in Nature Communications and led by the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), the University of Lleida (UdL) and the Biomedical Research Institute of Lleida (IRBLleida).
