L'obesitat és la pandèmia del segle XXI. A Espanya aproximadament el 25-30% de la població pateix obesitat i més del 50% sobrepès, en totes les etapes de la vida. L'obesitat és la 4a causa independent de mort, és la porta d'entrada de les malalties cròniques no-comunicables, com ara la diabetis tipus 2, malaltia coronària, càncer, malaltia mental. Cada any l'obesitat suposa gastar 7% dels pressupostos de cada país a Europa i un altre 8,4% en les malalties relacionades amb aquesta. Tot i això, tot i això, l'obesitat sempre ha estat minimitzada en tots els plans de salut, castigada i estigmatitzada, poc compresa perquè es considera "condició" i no "malaltia".
