The 5th Scientific Session and the 15th Annual Conference highlight the best of VHIR

Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) celebrated 1st and 2nd December the 5th Scientific Session and the 15th Annual Conference. More than 50 research works have been presented during the Scientific Session in the predoctoral, postdoctoral, residents and nursing categories. The best predoctoral communication has been Alba González Juncà, of the Gene Expression and Cancer group at VHIO with the work ‘TGFB Receptor I inhibitor radiosensitizes Glioblastoma’. The second award of this category has been for Nahia Ezkurdia Garmendia, from the liver diseases group at VHIR with the presentation ‘Sympathetic atrophy of portal hypertensive rats is generated by an afferent splanchnic signal via a brain-sympathetic mesenteric ganglia pathway’.The best postdoctoral presentation has been for Eva Colás Ortega, from the Research Unit in Biomedicine and Translational and Pediatric Oncology of VHIR, with the presentation ‘ETV5 and LPP, promoting EMT in endometrial carcinoma’. In the category of residents there has been an ex aequo for Laia Badia Cebada, from the liver diseases group with the title ‘Una estrategia diagnóstica simple basada en variables clínicas y elastografía es muy útil para hipertensión portal inicial en pacientes asintomáticos con enfermedad hepática crónica’, and Jaume Francisco Pascual, from the cardiovascular pathology group with the communication ‘Características inmunohistoquímicas de los trombos coronarios resistentes a fibrinolisis'. In the nusing group, the new category of this edition, the best communication was presented by Ana Sancho Gómez, from the Nutritional Support Unit with ‘Intervención nutricional en pacientes con Enfermedad Inflamatoria Intestinal (EII) en brote agudo’.The event has also served to present VHIR predoctoral grants to Víctor Llombart Sebastià, member of the neurovascular diseases group, Melania Montes Pérez, from the Research Unit in Biomedicine and Translational and Pediatric Oncology, Irina Torres Rodríguez, from the Nephrology group, and Sarai Rodríguez Navarro, from the liver diseases group. There has been also the presentation of the 'La Caixa' Post Mir grant to Eduard Bosch Peligero, for a traslational cardiovascular research project.At the end of the presentations of the 5th Scientific Session has started the 15th Annual Conference with Prof. Alastair Compston, Chairman of the Department of Neurosciences at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Editor de Brain, with the title ‘Multiple Sclerosis: A model disease for experimental medicine’, attended by a great number of researchers that with great interest for his research.VHIR's director, Dr. Joan Comella, has presented the annual results of the institute, highlighting the good global numbers in spite of the economic situation. The conference has been attended by Dr. Marta Aymerich, head of research at the regional health Catalan government, Dr. Ricard Pujol, research assistant of Catalan Health Institute, Dr. Jaume Raventós, general manager at HUVH and Dr. Jaume Roigé, assistance director at HUVH. All of them have insisted to congratulate VHIR and its good numbers along with the good results of the scientific session and annual conference.
