The 9th Anual Conference brings the future of personalized medicine

More than 300 people attended the 19th Vall d'Hebron University Hospital Annual Conference, featured by Professor Edward Abrahams, president of the Personalized Medicine Coalition. Before the conference, the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) celebrated the Scientific Session, with major changes in this edition.

More than 300 people attended the 19th Vall d'Hebron University Hospital Annual Conference, featured by http://www.personalizedmedicinecoalition.org/" Professor Edward Abrahams, president of the Personalized Medicine Coalition. Before the conference, the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) celebrated the Scientific Session, with major changes in this edition. Prof. Abrahams talked about how personalized medicine can play a key role to diagnose diseases more accurately and select the optimal treatment to each patient. The pharmaceutical industry knows this new scenario and for that reason they expect to increase the funding in this field over the next five years. Nowadays, nearly 70% of cancer therapies are personalized.Before his intervention, VHIR's director, Dr. Joan Comella, presented the main goals of the institute in this 2015 that included the approval of the Strategic Plan and the project of the new building that will have 6 floors.In the conference also participated Dr. Pere Soley, manager of the Institut Català de la Salut, Dr. Vicenç Martínez Ibáñez, manager of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Dr. Maria Josep Cerqueria, head of teaching at Vall d'Hebron, and Dr. Artur Palet, head of Business Development of Roche, who sponsored the Scientific Session. The head of the CERCA institution, Dr. Lluís Rovira, also participated at the inauguration of the Scientific Session.The Scientific Session arrived to the 9th edition with major changes in the organization. There were no oral presentations in this edition, there were poster sessions instead, divided into predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers, and physicians in training (MIR). A jury assessed the posters competition and selected those winners:Cristina Solà Adell, researcher of the Diabetes and Metabolism group for the poster "Topical administration of somatostatin prevents retinal neurodegeneration and early microvascular impairment in a spontaneous model of type 2 diabetes"Sílvia Casacuberta Serra, researcher of the Gene Therapy group for the poster "Generation of human myeloid-derived suppressor cells from monocytes and hematopoietic progenitors for their potential clinical application".Daniel Massó Vallés, researcher of the Mouse Models of Cancer Therapies group at the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), for the poster "Targeting Myc in Breast Cancer MetastasisEnrique Sanz García, physician in training at the Gastroenterology Service, for the poster "Clinical and molecular characterization of refractory BRAFmutant metastatic colorectar carcinoma (Mcrc): Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology Phase I program cohort".The http://www.vhir.org/portal1/unit_organs.asp?s=institut&contenttypeid=317&contentid=1300 Internal Scientific Council approved to present two different areas of research each year. The areas chosen for this year were thehttp://www.vhir.org/portal1/area.asp?s=recerca&contentid=1355&t=Malalties%20Digestives%20i%20Hep%E0tiques Digestive and Hepatic Diseases, and the http://www.vhir.org/portal1/area.asp?s=recerca&contentid=1272&t=Oncologia Oncology area. Finally, Dr. Miquel Vila, head of the Neurodegenerative Diseases group, and Dr. Israel Molina, researcher of the Infectious Diseases group, explained on Friday the current state of two important studies that they led in 2014.The winners of the Scientific Session received the award after the Annual Conference, together with the predoctoral researchers funded by the friends of VHIR, the predoctoral researcher funded by Fundació Josep Palau Francàs and the researchers granted by AGAUR.The Scientific Meeting and the Annual Conference counted with the collaboration of Roche, Hotel Mandarín and Catering Arcasa.
