The Research Unit in Biomedicine and Translational and Pediatric Oncology at Vall d'Hebron Institut de Recerca (VHIR)) led by Dr. Jaume Reventós,has won the award 'Best Health Ideas 2011' organized by Diario Médico in the category of research and pharmacology for the identification of 20 genes involved in the development of endometrial cancer that helps its diagnosis.Dr. Reventós and his team, together with Dr. Antonio Gil-Moreno, from the Gynecology Service of Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and researchers from the biotechnology company Geadic A.I.E., received the award at a ceremony held on November 7 at the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, Barcelona. The discovery of these molecular markers, which was published in the International Journal of Cancer, creates a new minimally invasive diagnostic method, highly sensitive in detecting this type of cancer. These results are important because until now hadn't been found molecular markers linked to endometrial cancer. By identifying these genes, it has been laid the groundwork for developing a screening test for endometrial cancer effective, minimally invasive, highly reliable, in which also the gynecologist can get the outpatient sample without requiring hospital setting. On the other hand, the comic, 'What happens with the grandfather?', produced by Merce Boada, director of the ACE Foundation and head of the Alzheimer group at VHIR, won a prize in the category of solidarity and fundraising.
