Donation is for research on precision medicine searching for different therapeutic approaches and prognosis based on genomic data.

The third edition of the solidarity campaign "Deixa't prendre el pèl" (literally "Let you take your hair", meaning "let yourself be teased") for childhood cancer research has raised 22,046 euros for the http://en.vhir.org/portal1/grup-equip.asp?s=recerca&contentid=186749 Translational Research Group in Childhood and Adolescent Cancer of the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) leads Dr. Josep Sánchez de Toledo. On Sunday, September 16, the avenue Paseo Marítimo de Cambrils became a great solidary hairdresser thanks to the participation of 80 barbers and 10 hairdressers. This year, 1,112 tickets for barbershop and hairdressing services were sold. The campaign is promoted by the City of Cambrils, through the Technical Office of Social Inclusion and has the support of the association "Barberos de España".The donation that they have made to the Translational Research Group in Childhood and Adolescent Cancer of VHIR will be allocated to a project that studies the possibility of choosing between different therapeutic approaches and/or making a prognosis based on molecular and genomic data (precision medicine) in patients with pediatric tumors. The low frequency of tumors, the variability between patients, and the difficulty of access to the sample (small number and few cases) are the main obstacles to the advancement of this knowledge that should allow an improvement in the quality of life of these pediatric patients and a higher success rate in their treatment. "The implementation of this project will allow the genomic characterization of tumors to incorporate specific drugs to the therapy, according to the alterations detected in each patient. These improvements would lead to an optimization of the treatments and an increase in the survival rates, especially in the group of patients who still do not respond positively to current therapies," explains Dr. Sánchez de Toledo. The money collected has been obtained by sale tickets for hairdressing and barbering services, merchandising, private donations and contributions from collaborating establishments and sponsors. In addition, this year the activity has expanded. On the one hand, it has incorporated 10 hairdressers and has been opened to the female public, and on the other, it has been complemented with gastronomic offer and an electronic vermouth, which were very successful and served to further increase the contributions."Deixa't prendre el pèl"The initiative "Deixa't prendre el pèl" was born in 2016 by the barber from Cambrils, Javier Torrente. The idea born when he got knowledge of a case of childhood cancer. The porpoise of the initiative is, on one hand, to sensitize the general public about the childhood cancer disease and raise money for its research. On the hand, the initiative helps to publicize the trade of the barbershops that is increasingly recognized. The campaign has had very good acceptance from the first moment and has been growing. In the first edition 500 hairdressers and barbershop services were made and collected 10,216.20 euros. In the second year, the services have already increased to 800 with a collection of 13,537 euros.
