The chief editor of Nature gives the 20th Annual Conference of Vall d'Hebron

Dr. Philip Campbell spoke about the editorial process that follows an article in his magazine. The conference was held after the 10th VHIR's Scientific Session concluded.

The chief editor of the prestigious journal Nature, Sir Philip Campbell, was the main protagonist of the 20th Annual Conference of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, on 16 December in the Teaching Hall of the Hospital. At the ceremony of the conference, the director of Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), Dr. Joan Comella, presented the results of the Institute, after concluding three intense days of presentations and posters of the 10th VHIR's Scientific Session.In his speech, the editor of Nature spoke about the context of scientific publications, focusing on the editorial processes that follow the publication and in the magazine's commitment to research integrity and its the subsequent replication. Campbell also highlighted the pressure to which the principal investigators and young postdocs are subjected.The ceremony of the annual conference was inaugurated by Dr. Toni Andreu, Director of Research of the Health Department, the manager of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Dr. Vicenç Martínez Ibáñez, and the director of VHIR. After Campbell's conference, two of the researches most voted by principal investigators of VHIR in 2015: a new technology to choose the best treatment against hepatitis, led by Dr. Josep Quer, and a study of prevalence of schistosomiasis in a region of Angola, headed by Dr. Cristina BocanegraFor his part, Dr. Joan Comella presented the annual results of VHIR, emphasizing the creation of the Vall d'Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus. In this 2016, VHIR has had an increase in its research staff of 150 people, has once again presented data of scientific production quality, and has checked a total of 33.7 millions of euros. As an example of the creation of wealth generated in the Institute, Dr. Comella stressed that for every euro that the Generalitat de Catalunya invests in VHIR, the Institute manages to generate 17.5 euros more, competitively in the market. Delivery of "Amics de Vall d'Hebron" Training AidsIn addition to the scientific and institutional results achieved by VHIR in the last year, the conference attendees got to know the new young researchers sponsored by "Amics del VHIR" and collaborating companies.As it was done last year, all the "Amics" of research of Vall d'Hebron were invited to attend and personally delivered the diplomas of predoctoral grants to five new young researchers sponsored through their collaboration. With this program, the awarded candidates will be able to develop their training for three years, conduct their doctoral thesis and obtained their PhD. The awarded ones this year were Manuel Torres, David Aluja, Gisela Ruiz, Marta Pozuelo and Irene Ribera.Moreover, thanks to the collaboration of companies and foundations friends of research at of the Vall d'Hebron, the training of two researchers has been sponsored. They are Begoña Santos, awarded thanks of the funding by the Fundació Bancària "la Caixa",and Berta Saez, awarded thanks to a donation by the fashion brand Intropia. These grants has been awarded respectively by Beatriz Rocamora, representing La Caixa, and Ignacio Hernández, director of "Rastrillos Solidarios" of Intropia. VHIR's Scientific SessionThe Scientific Session took place on 13 and 15 December, with two notable news: a whole day was dedicated to nursing research and the exchange of experiences, with 20 oral presentations, and the number of posters presented increased, going from 48 a last year to 64 in this 10th Edition.As it was done last year, during the session, two areas of research were presented, which this year have been the Area of Infectious Diseases and the Area of Neuroscience. Between the two areas, coordinated by Dr. Tomàs Pumarola and Manuel Comabella respectively, was presented the work carried out by 14 groups.Finally, at the Conference, prizes were awarded for the best posters. In the category of predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers the first awarded was Blanca Majem, a researcher of the Biomedical Research Group in Gynaecology, and the second prize ex aequo was for Marina Fortea, a predoctoral researcher in the Group of Digestive Physiology and Pathophysiology, and Elena Martínez, also a researcher at the Biomedical Research Group in Gynaecology. In the Nursing category, Esperanza Zuriguel won the first prize, second prize was for Vanessa Buena, and the third, Alba Riera. The three nurses are part of the Health Care Research Group at VHIR. Finally, the award for the category of residents was awarded to Mariya Sigatullina, resident of Paediatric Neurology Service.
