It accounts for about 5% of all female tumours, is the sixth most common and fifth leading cause of cancer-related death in women. The main problem in the fight against this disease is that it does not present any guiding symptoms for doctors and patients leading to rapid diagnosis. This means that it is diagnosed in advanced stages in more than 70% of cases and the overall 5-year survival rate is less than 30%.Within the group of Biomedical Research in Gynaecology led by Dr. Antonio Gil, who is also the head of the Gynaecology Service of the Hospital, Dr. Anna Santamaria and the rest of the researchers develop lines of research to respond to the most important clinical needs related to ovarian cancer, such as early diagnosis, the evolution of the disease and its spread and the search for new therapies. In relation to treatment, Vall d'Hebron treats cases of gynaecological cancer in the Oncological Gynaecology and Lower Genital Tract Pathology Unit, which is made up of 8 professionals who attend to nearly 9,000 patients each year and perform half a thousand surgical operations.
