More than 500 people attended the concert given by 24 renowned Catalan piano players at the Axa Auditorium- Illa Diagonal.Dr. Alegre's group is focused on chronic fatigue syndrome, which causes physical and intellectual limitations in the patient, as well as it is major cause of long-term incapacity for work among adults and academic/school absence among teenagers. There are other associated comorbidities that coexist with this syndrome, such as fibromyalgia and multiple chemical sensitivity, that even worsen the physical and intellectual capacity, the prognosis and quality of life of these patients.Despite recent discoveries, the pathophysiology of chronic fatigue syndrome remains unknown. Several potential causes for the development of illness have been proposed, including infections, neuroimmune dysfunction and genetic factors. Until now, the research has not found yet an effective treatment. According to Dr. Alegre, "the nature of chronic fatigue syndrome is complex. Our aim is to delve better the patient phenotyping and the the stratification symptoms severity, as well as understanding the immunogenetic and neuroinflammatory basis, in order to advance in the research of this syndrome and other associated comorbidities".The Chronic Fatigue research lab, coordinated by Dr. Jesús Castro, has as its ultimate goal to find potential genetic and immunological biomarkers, as well as new treatments for this condition. They carry-out basic and clinical studies and intervention trials, with the aim to find new therapeutic targets to stop the nosologic processes and to improve the quality of life of patients. The aim of VHIR researchers with the piano concert of October 18th is to raise funds for the research of these emerging medical processes.
