The Daniel Bravo Foundation awarded Dr. Ignasi Barba a grant to do research abroad

The http://www.fundaciodanielbravo.org/es/beques-daniel-bravo/" Daniel Bravo Andreu Private Foundation has awarded three scholarships in 2016 for biomedical research abroad to Dr. Ignasi Barba from Cardiovascular Diseases research group at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), Dr. Patricia Garcia-Cañadilla form the Department of Information Technologies and Communications of the University Pompeu Fabra, and Sergi Sayols from Department of Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Genetics of Institute Hospital del Mar Medical Research (IMIM).These grants endowed with 3,000 euros monthly plus travel costs allow scientists to continue their postdoctoral training in some of the most prestigious centres in the world in cardiovascular research.Dr. Ignasi Barba will stay in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge (UK) in the laboratory of Dr. Kevin M Brindle. In 2003, Barba joined the Laboratory of Experimental Cardiology at VHIR led by Professor David Garcia-Dorado, a world leader in research of ischemia-reperfusion, which has been responsible for the platform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and has served as principal investigator on the study of various aspects of metabolism related to cardiovascular heart disease and myocardial ischemia."The purpose of my stay is to study the enzyme ALDH2, after VHIR recently discovered two chemical compounds in clinical use that are able to activate the in vitro ALDH2" says Ignasi Barba. His experience will be essential to join the team of Dr. Brindle, a leader in the application of hyperpolarization NMR studies in the field of life sciences. In this regard, Professor Garcia-Dorado stressed Barba's "solid biochemistry training" and the relevanceof being "one of the first cardiovascular researchers to apply system biology in basic, translational and clinical troubleshooting, introducing this approach".With his participation in Brindle's research group, both VHIR and the University of Cambridge will acquire new skills that will allow them to advance in their research.
