VHIR’s director highlighted the importance of raising awareness among politicians to prioritize the investment in drugs

The director of Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), Joan X. Comella, participated in the international meeting Globalization Opportunities in Public Health, held in Mexico DF recently, with the lecture “Universal protocol for lysosomal diseases: general features and viability”. In front of professionals from the Mexican public health system and experts in rare diseases, Dr. Comella explained the integral attention that offers Vall d’Hebron University Hospital to patients suffering rare diseases, such as lysosomal diseases. He also talked about the investigations that are being carried out at VHIR thanks to the data and samples taken from the Catalan hospital, which is a referent in Spain and Europe in this field. On the other hand, VHIR’s director insisted on the importance to raise awareness among politicians to prioritize the investment in research to treat rare diseases. Finally, he highlighted the role of patients’ associations in Spain, which “act as interlocutor between the market and politicians”.
