Dr. Eloy Espín, new president in waiting of the European Society of Coloproctology

The European Society of Coloproctology is one of the two most important societies at an International level in its sector.

Dr. Eloy Espín, head of the Colon and Rectal Surgery Unit of the General and Digestive Surgery Service ant Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and principal investigator of the General Surgery research group at Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), has been named president in waiting of the European Society of Coloproctology. It is one of the two most relevant societies in its field at the international level together with the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), and its goal is to promote training and research in coloproctology and develop clinical guidelines. The position of the president in waiting lasts one year, then the person becomes elected president and, finally, president of the Society. This is a position that allows the person to be prepared to chair the institution two years later.The trajectory of Dr. Eloy Espín in Vall d'Hebron dates back to 1998, when he began as a surgeon at the General and Digestive Surgery Service at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital. Since 2005 he has been coordinating the Colon and Rectal Surgery Unit, a reference unit at national and international level. In this sense, Vall d'Hebron is one of the eight centers that have been accredited to be colorectal robotics trainers in Europe and the Unit is accredited as an Advanced Unit by the Spanish Society of Coloproctology.In 2001, Dr. Eloy Espín obtained the European Board of Coloproctology (UEMS) and since 2008 is an International Fellow of ASCRS. He is currently an examiner of the European Board of Coloproctology. In the field of research and dissemination, he has written 19 book chapters, 55 articles in Spanish journals and 158 in indexed international journals and has presented more than 250 papers in national conferences and 150 in international ones. He has given more than 150 interventions in national and international courses and conferences. He has participated in 9 research projects funded by the official Spanish or international bodies.
