VHIR’s researchers explain the link between pollution and asthma

Dr. Ferran Morell, head of the Pneumology group at Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), and Dr. Xavier Muñoz, researcher from the same group, talked to TV3, TVE and BTV about the effects of environmental pollution in people’s health.Dr. Muñoz alerted that “pollution might trigger asthma in people who are not asthmatic, but are more likely to suffer it”. Since summer, he is studying in Barcelona and Ribes de Freser whether pollution is one of the factors that induce the onset of asthma in adulthood. Besides, the doctor added that the continuous exposure to the toxic substances of the air can also have consequences in the cardio-circulatory system, by developing heart diseases and cardiovascular alterations. On the other hand, Dr. Morell was interviewed in the tv programme 'Els Matins de TV3' to explain in detail the which are the toxic substances of the environment that affect people's health. According to him, "whereas it's quite easy for the industry to pollute, doctors have to spend over 20 years for determining that lung cancer is directly associated to pollution".On Monday, the government of Catalonia activated in Barcelona and 15 cities close to the capital, the protocol against environmental pollution, because of the episode that obstructs the dispersion of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the atmosphere.
