VHIR’s researcher participates in a forum on Nanomedicine of the Samca Nanotechnology Chair

Dr. Ibane Abasolo, researcher from the Drug Delivery and Targeting group at CIBBIM-Nanomedicine at Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), presented applications of optical imaging in preclinical oncology at the "http://catedrasunizar.wordpress.com/2013/05/14/catedra-samca-de-nanotecnologia-2/" scientific-technological forum on Nanomedicine, organized by the Nanotechnology Samca Chair of Universidad de Zaragoza, the 4th of June. In a round table on the use of nanotechnology in the diagnosis by biosensors and medical imaging, Dr. Abasolo exposed several illustrative cases which demonstrated how non-invasive optical imaging (in the bioluminescence and fluorescence methods) can contribute to the acceleration of the validation process of new nanodrugs. The strategy which is currently used in the FVPR area (Functional Validation & Preclinical Research) at CIBBIM-Nanomedicine consists in developing oncological models that can be monitored by bioluminescence, whereas the nanoparticles tested are monitored thanks to fluorescence markers. The combination of both imaging modalities enhances, in few animals and with a lower expenses in cost and time, checking nanoparticles’ biodistribution and efficacy.
