The chapter "Science and innovation in the university hospital of the 21st century" analyzes the role of hospitals as centers of transformation, innovation and social and economic development.

Dr. Joan X. Comella, director of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), and Laia Arnal, director of the Business Development area, have participated in the writing of the book "Innovación sanitaria para salir reforzados de la crisis de la covid-19", coordinated by Farmaindustria and the consulting firm HIRIS Care. The publication, presented on February 18, focuses on how we can get out of the crisis caused by the pandemic and how health and science can contribute to it. National experts in medicine, research, economics, health policy and management provide their insights.Dr. Joan X. Comella and Laia Arnal have written the chapter "Science and innovation in the university hospital of the 21st century", where they analyze the role of hospitals as centers of transformation, innovation and social and economic development. "The covid-19 has been a clear test of stress for our health and research system and forces us to reflect deeply to address the changes needed to meet, not only this challenge, but also others that we already had before, as is the aging of the population, the chronicity of the diseases and unmet medical needs", considers Dr. Comella. "In this sense, hospitals and their research institutes are engines of change, because they generate knowledge and, from there, they can drive the transformation into wealth and social development. It is a challenge that must be done collectively and with a long-term vision, with a real social commitment that guarantees the quality, equity and sustainability of our healthcare system", he affirms. For her part, Laia Arnal, Director of Business Development at VHIR, explains that "the hospitals of the future will be places where healthcare, research, innovation and teaching activities are carried out in an integrated way. This will allow us to respond to the great challenges of society and develop solutions in the field of diagnosis and therapies that can be implemented in the health system". To achieve this, collaboration is needed: "We need to reach agreements with small and large companies and technology centers, that is, institutions that provide complementary skills and knowledge with whom to develop transformative solutions". "The hospitals of the future will be flexible, dynamic and very proactive environments with great participation from healthcare professionals and also from society, from patients. Innovation will be the way to generate social and economic value", she concludes. The book can be downloaded https://www.hiris.care/site/wp-content/uploads/BOOK-Innovacio%CC%81n-sanitaria-WEB.pdf here.
