Institut Català de la Salut (ICS) has awarded the 2020 Research Awards to researchers who have contributed significantly to the development of research in the health sciences of ICS with an activity of recognized scientific level. Among them is Dr. Joaquín Burgos Cibrian, from the Infectious Diseases Service of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and principal investigator of the Infectious Diseases research group of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). From the Vall d'Hebron Hospital Campus, Dr. Josep Tabernero, head of the Medical Oncology Service of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and director of the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), has also been awarded.ICS carries out extensive scientific activity through seven health research institutes integrated into the organization's hospitals and primary care teams. Every year it organizes the ICS Research Day to promote high quality research and to recognize the scientific trajectories of excellence of researchers from the institution. The awards were usually made public at the institution's annual research session, which this year has been postponed due to the pandemic. ICS Young Researcher Award 2020: Joaquin Burgos CibrianDr. Joaquín Burgos Cibrian is an adjunct physician in the Infectious Diseases Service of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, principal investigator of the Infectious Diseases research group at the VHIR and professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.He has a degree in Medicine from the University of Barcelona and has been linked to research since he finished the specialty of Internal Medicine at Vall d'Hebron in 2010. Later he joined the Infectious Diseases Service of the hospital. In 2013 he presented his doctoral thesis in the field of pneumonia and, in recent years, his research has been focused on the study of human papillomavirus infection, which determines a very high risk of genital cancer in male and female carriers, in patients with HIV. In 2020, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, he has dedicated efforts to the study of the SARS-CoV-2 virus together with the Vall d'Hebron Infectious Diseases team.For his part, Dr. Joaquín Burgos emphasizes, "I am very grateful for receiving this award, which represents a great recognition of the effort and dedication invested in research. Combining research activity with healthcare is quite complicated, but it certainly enriches the perspective of the health professional and offers new challenges that are very stimulating". "I would also like to thank the Infectious Diseases Service of the Vall d'Hebron Hospital, all the members of the administrative, healthcare and research team for their help and for their teamwork, without which it would have been impossible to achieve the results obtained," he says. Finally, Dr. Burgos concludes that " I have developed all my professional and research career in ICS centers, so I maintain a close relationship with the institution. It has been the one who has provided me with all the necessary and essential resources to be able to develop the different studies we have carried out". ICS Hospitals Career Award 2020: Josep Tabernero CaturlaDr. Josep Tabernero is the head of the Medical Oncology Service at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and director of the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) and professor at the University of Vic-UCC. Trained at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and the Sant Pau Hospital, he rejoined Vall d'Hebron in 1997.Dr. Tabernero is one of the most relevant researchers and with the greatest international contributions to cancer research, especially in the field of gastrointestinal tumors. He has contributed to pioneering advances in medical oncology and precision cancer medicine, identifying new mechanisms involved in the development of colon tumors and designing effective and targeted therapies against this cancer. He has been president of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) and received the National Research Award of Catalonia in 2019. A great organizer, he has made the Vall d'Hebron Oncology Service an international benchmark for the treatment of cancer patients."I am very honored by this award that I want to extend to all the professionals of the Vall d'Hebron Hospital and the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) who with their daily work are making a decisive contribution to the fight against cancer", values Dr. Josep Tabernero, who emphasizes that only with the effort and involvement of all the people involved in the process of an oncological patient, and with their coordination, either from the lab or from the healthcare, can improve the treatment of patients and achieve advances that give them new therapeutic options that until now they did not have. "What my group and I have achieved as researchers would not have been possible without this collective effort, and, in this line, I believe that the mission of the Campus Vall d'Hebron as a reference center should be to contribute to the advancement of medicine in order to offer our patients a better quality of life and, to the general population, a better state of health, thanks to prevention policies and the promotion of research", he says. "In addition, the fact that this is an award from the ICS, an institution to which I have been linked for so many years from Vall d'Hebron, as head of Medical Oncology, makes me especially thrilled", he adds. Among the winners there is also Dr. Miguel ángel Muñoz Pérez, head of the Unit for Research Support in Primary Care at the ICS-IDIAP Jordi Gol in Barcelona, who has been awarded for his research career in ICS Primary Care, and the predoctoral researcher Mireia Ramos Pérez, from the Germans Trias i Pujol Institute, who has received recognition for the best research article in Health Sciences prepared by a predoctoral researcher from the ICS and the Linked Research Institutes.
