Dr. Margarita Salas opened 'Women and Science' at VHIR

Dr. Margarita Salas opened on March 9 the first edition of the cycle "http://www.vhir.org/DDGRecerca%5CDOCENCIAACTIVITATS%5C2012%5C2012_0027%5C2012_0027_003.pdf" 'Women and Science'. The recognized biochemistry, who came from receiving the previous day the prize Clara Campoamor of the Town hall of Madrid for here contribution to the Molecular Biology and the research on the virus Phi29, key to understand the functioning of the DNA, has explained her personal experience as a woman, researcher and manager of research institutions, and has reviewed the evolution of the participation of women in the science.In a conference full of common sense and emotion, Dra. Salas has revised the advances of women in the scientific field and her personal career, from the beginnings up to her recent contributions to the investigation. The audience, most of them women, has been grateful for the vital and scientific lesson of the invited and asked more to know her opinion about the situation of women nowadays in science. Prof. Salas has proved to be an optimist with the paper women and, in spite of being opposite to the quotas, has bet for the increasingly important presence of women in the research centers as scientific and managers.The second session, a Round Table scheduled for March 15 under the title 'Opportunities and challenges' with experts in different areas has been cancelled due to the fog that has prevented that the guests were coming to Barcelona.In the third meeting, on March 22, there will be a one day Coaching Workshop conducted by Yellow Window Consultants, accredited and co-financed by the European Commission. The workshop has limited places, and is open to VHIR researchers, as well as those coming from other research centers.The cycle will finish on March 28 with the closing conference of Carmen Vela, an experienced researcher and entrepreneur. Vela has been recently appointed Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation of the Spanish Government.
