Two Vall d'Hebron professionals winners of Research Awards by the Health Catalan Institute. The Dr. Elena édez of VHIO and Dr. Miquel Casas, of VHIR.

Dr. Miquel Casas, Award to the Research Trajectory at the ICS HospitalsThis past morning the Research Awards of the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) has delivered during the celebration of the 10th Research Day of the ICS and the 11th Research Day of IDIAP. This edition, two professionals from Vall d'Hebron have been awarded.On one side, Dr. Miquel Casas, senior consultant of the Psychiatry Department of Vall d'Hebron and head of the Research Group of Psychyatry, Mental Health and Addictions of Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), has received the ex aequo Award to the Research Trajectory in Hospitals of ICS.On the other side, Dr. Elena Elez Fernández, oncologist at the digestive tumors unit of the Oncology Department of Vall d'Hebron Hospital and researcher at the Gastrointestinal and Endocrine tumors at Vall d'Hebron Oncology Institute (VHIO) has received ex aequo, the Award to the Young Researcher of ICS.When receiving the prize, the Dr. Elez has thanked ICS the chance to guarantee her training and of all the students and residents, as well as to ease up the involvement of research on her daily life. The Dr. Casas has reviewed his trajectory at Vall d'Hebron where he contributed to the creation of the first Psychiatry Department of the Hospital.This year's main topic at the ICS-IDIAPJGol Day has focused on the big databases that contain clinical data for the research on health's improvement.One of the many roundtables hosted Dra. Anna Rossell, head of the Neurovascular Diseases research group of VHIR, with a conference on "Research of ictus biomarkers: from prevention to rehabilitation, through acute treatment of the disease". She has introduced three studies in which she has participated as an example of collaborative work within different healthcare levels and research personnel. Awarded ex aequo for his Research Trajectory in ICS Hospitals Dr. Miquel Casas graduated in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Doctor specialized in psychiatry since 1979, cursing his residency at Santa Creu and Santa Pau Hospital, and a further training in experimental and clinic psychopharmacology at Karolinska Institute of Stockholm and legal psychology at the Universidad Computense de Madrid.Has been the head of the Psychiatry Department at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital for 16 years, where he was delegated to design and develop the first Psychiatry Department at the same hospital.Today, the Psychiatry Department of HUVH is a national and international reference due to its studies on Neurodevelopment Disorders, mainly Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Psychotropic Drugs Addiction (PDA), Dual Pathology (DP), Scholar Failure, Transcultural and Immigration Psychiatry, Fetal Alcoholic Syndrome, etc. All reflected in its published papers, edited books, scholarships, funding and subventions received and on the 14 consortium of International Research that it belongs to.Currently he is senior assessor to the Psychiatry Department and ICS, and director of the corporative Program "Neurodevelopment and Learning through Long Vital Cycle Syndromes". He is also a University Professor of Psychiatry at Universitat Autònoma, and head of the Research Group Psychiatry, Mental Health and Addictions of Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). Awarded ex aequo for his Research Trajectory in ICS Hospitals Dr. Elena Elez Fernándes, from University Hospital Vall d'Hebron and Vall d'Hebron Oncology Institute, graduated in Medicine at Universitat de Lleida and specialized in medical oncology at the Oncology Catalan Institute (ICO). Once over with her training, she joined the Oncology Department of the HUVH as an associated doctor at the Digestive Tumors Unit, where she has subspecialized in colorectal cancer and has developed her research on biomarkers and targeted therapies.At the healthcare level, she is responsible of a monographic assessment to colorectal cancer patient, where more than 300 new cases are studied and 1000 followed up every year. A third of these patients are transferred from all over Catalonia and Spain.Since she joined the Unit, she has worked both in healthcare professional activity and in research. She has been involved as a co-researcher in more than 200 studies through all their clinic development stages. Her research has contributed to the optimization and management of citosttic treatments and biological drugs, which she uses on her healthcare activity. It is expected of her to develop new research lines based on the follow up of the oncology patient by liquid biopsies.Since 2015 she mentors new residents at the Oncology Department and has contributed to the reviewing of the training strategy of the hospital, ensuring the academic projection of the residents through their publications and papers, both at the national and international level.
