The head of the ICU department at Vall d'Hebron Hospital and reponsible of the Intensive Medicine group at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR)), Dr. Jordi Rello, is examining the first hundred revenues of influenza A H1N1 in Spanish ICUs in a coordinated effort by the Spanish Society of Intensive Care Medicine, Critical and Coronary Units (Semicyuc). Unlike last year, cases accelerated in mid-December, during the week 51, and a new outbreak can appear in late January or early February. "The pattern of disease onset is similar to seasonal flu, but there is a new pattern of affectation, especially in the form of bronchospasm and, in particular, viral pneumonia", says Dr. Rello.
