On Thursday October 20, in Santiago de Compostela, has been celebrated the first Forum on transplant in intensive care units, with the presence of the leading experts in the field of critical care of 7 Spanish hospitals with major activity in the area of transplants. The forum of transplants in intensive care, organized by Dr. Jordi Rello, head of clinical research group and innovation in pneumonia and sepsis (CRIPS) of Vall d'Hebron Institute for Research (VHIR) is accredited by the Network Biomedical Research Center of Respiratory Diseases (CIBERER).This forum was created with the intention of developing initiatives of scientific interest and become a forum for discussion of problems that arise in the care of transplanted patients during the postoperative period in intensive care units. The first edition focuses on lung transplantation and has the presence of Dr. Marcos Restrepo, pulmonologist at the Veterans Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, USA, presenting the American experience and review the infectious complications of lung transplantation in the ICU.During the meeting will be shown the results of a collaborative research project, and Dr. Rello will present proposals to implement at least two cooperative research projects in lung transplantation in the ICU. "Acute respiratory failure after lung transplantation may be due to primary graft dysfunction, a humoral rejection, cellular rejection or lung infections. We want to identify biomarkers to differentiate these conditions and optimize antibiotic, antifungal and immunosuppressive", says Dr. Rello, adding that aim to develop a research project to improve the conditions of the lungs in donors and to reduce waiting lists. During the day, Joan Ramon Masclans, from VHIR's CRIPS group, presented the educational objectives of the residents in OCD, and Judith Sacanell, of the same group, the initial results of a survey on differences in the postoperative period in the 7 participating centers.Papers will be published as review articles in a series in the publications 'Medicina Intensiva'.
