The First Workshop on Nanomedicine UABCEI took place on June 5th. The Workshop general objective and scope was to promote the Research and Innovation in Nanomedicine in the context of the Campus of International Excellence UABCEI.To that end, this workshop provided an opportunity to assess the potential of the environment UAB-CEI in the field of Nanomedicine, inform about the strategic opportunity of this field of research, promote knowledge between research groups, identify synergies and facilitate the development of transversal projects and linking research with society and companies, promoting transference processes. The workshop was developed in short sessions (30-45 minutes), focussing on the strategies and opportunities in the field of Nanomedicine, moving from European to Catalonian context. The workshop was an extraordinary opportunity for interaction between researchers and communication of the activities being developed in different institutions members of the UABCEI. One of the sessions, 'Research Networks, Centers and Infraestructures for Nanomedicine Research in Catalonia', was presented by Dr. Simó Schwartz, coordinator of the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Research Centre for Nanomedicine–CIBBIM- at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). Dr. Schwartz's talk was about "the advancement of Nanomedicine is rising hopes and expectations in the biomedical field to improve current therapies and diagnostic procedures. However, new challenges are also rising to ensure success. Among them, the need of multicisciplinary approaches requires a joint venture of several research disciplines and technologies in a manner hardly seen before. Several initiatives in the form of networks, research centers and governamental agencies are needed to support and reinforce these interactions. Here we will comment on some of these initiatives in Catalonia".During the workhop also participated with an oral presentation Dr. Anna Rosell, member of the Neurovascular Research Laboratory at VHIR, who together with Dr. Anna Roig, from ICMAB-CSIC presented 'Magnetically Labeled Endothelial Progenitor Cells for Cellular Therapy in Brain Ischemia Treatment'.
