The first prize of nEUROgastro TANDEM finances the proposed project, which must be completed within one year.

Eloísa Salvo-Romero is a predoctoral researcher, in her final stage of the doctorate, within the research group in Physiology and Digestive Physiopathology of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). She has just received the recognition of the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, for her work 'The progression and pain in pancreatic cancer associated with the activation of the mastocyte for psychological stress.' The award is given in the course nEUROgastro TANDEM, which is celebrated by this society, in which teams of two researchers (a clinic and a basic one) present proposals for translational research to be carried out in the following year. Paulo Pfitzinger, a gastroenterologist in training at the Technische Universität in Munich, is the clinical participant winning the proposal next to Eloísa. The first prize of nEUROgastro TANDEM funds the proposed project, which has to be made between the two centres in collaboration within a period of one year. The prize includes the recognition by the Nature Reviews Gastroenterology and Hepatology journal, in addition to a one-year free subscription for the two winners. To obtain her PhD, Eloísa Salvo-Romero is working on the identification of the ethiopathogenic mechanisms of gastrointestinal dysfunction related to stress, with a special focus on the immune system of the mucosa, as a relevant component of intestinal barrier function. Psycho-social factors have a strong impact on pathophysiology and symptomatology of functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.nEUROgastro TANDEMPromoted by the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ENSM), nEUROgastro TANDEM is a meeting aimed at young researchers with the aim of promoting collaboration between basic and clinical scientists and professionals in neurogastroenterology in Europe. This year the second nEUROgastro TANDEM course was held and was attended by 20 young researchers from 11 countries that worked as partners for 8 weeks to design and present a translational research project.
