First year of the European training network Neurogut

This month, it is a year since the incorporation of http://www.neurogut.eu/fellows/early-stage-researcher/pribic-teodora.html" Teodora Pribic at Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), in the framework of the European training project http://www.neurogut.eu/" Neurogut. Teodora, who is from Serbia, is doing her PhD about the relationship between digestive sensations and central nervous system activity. With the tuition of Dr. Fernando Azpiroz and Dr. Javier Santos, head and principal investigator of the Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Digestive group at VHIR respectively, the young researcher is working on identifying brain networks related to hedonic response to eating and how they are different in healthy subjects and patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of this project is to develop a series of biomarkers for objective and quantitative evaluation of effects of ingested food that may serve for the characterization of the pathophysiology of functional gastrointestinal disorders."I came to VHIR because I found the project very interesting", says Teodora. She gives a positive assessment of this year working at VHIR and soon she will be publishing the first results of her research. The Neurogut project is among the first such training networks in gastroenterology and it is devoted to neural regulation of intestinal functions. It is funded with a total financial volume of 3.7 M euros from the 7th Framework Programme.Neurogastroenterology is a subspecialty of gastroenterology and investigates the influence of the nervous system (the central, the autonomic, and the enteric nervous system) on functions of the gastrointestinal tract (motility, secretion, absorption) and their dysfunctions, infections, and inflammation in disease states, but also with the effects of normal and abnormal functions on health, nutrition and psychological wellbeing.
