Friends of Vall d’Hebron fund the pre-doctoral program of 11 young researchers

The monthly donations from nearly 1,500 Friends of VHIR have made possible the hiring of 11 young researchers that are doing their PhD at Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR). On December 11th, a representation of Friends of VHIR gave the research fellowships to 9 new researchers. These are the scientists who, thanks to the solidarity of many individuals, are working to improve tomorrow's medicine:Mireia Pagerols Teixidó. She investigates the predisposing genetic factors of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder within the Psychiatry, Mental Health and Addictions group. She also participates in studies of pharmacogenetics with the aim to identify genetic variants involved in the differential response to the pharmacological treatment.Cristina Andrés Verges. The project that she is leading at the Microbiology group consists in the molecular characterization of the flu virus in critically ill patients, using ultra-sequencing tools. Her goal is to detect viral factors in patients with severe conditions.Elena González Sánchez. She is doing her PhD with the Animal Models and Cancer group, focused in melanoma. She studies the role of the LKB1 protein and the mutations associated to this cancer, with the aim to develop new personalized and effective therapies.Anna Marcé Grau. She is studying epileptic encephalopathies at the Pediatrics Neurology group. Using new sequencing techniques and functional studies with zebrafish, she aims to identify new therapeutic targets.Alfonso Parrilla Ocon. He works at the Biomedical Research Unit in Gynecology and his thesis is focused on the research of personalized therapies to improve the treatment of advanced ovarian cancer.Elia Gil Varea. She works with the Clinical Neuroimmunology group with the aim to find causal genetic variants and their functional implications in patients with multiple sclerosis.Marina Fortea Guillamon. She is studying a disease called eosinophilic esophagitis within the Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Digestive Tract group. People with this condition suffer inflammation of the esophagus, which is the digestive tube that transports the food from the mouth to the stomach.Marina Gabriel Salazar. Her research is focused on stroke. She investigates with the Neurovascular Diseases group with the aim to find biomarkers of functional recovery and new treatments to improve patient's mobility after suffering this disease.Yoelsis Garcia Mayea. He is studying a type of cancer that affects both the larynx and the pharynx, with the group of Oncology and Molecular Pathology. Specifically, he investigates the role of stem cells in the epidermoid carcinoma.Casandra Riera Ribas. She works at the Translational Bioinformatics group, developing new tools to predict pathological mutations in different diseases.Luz Jubierre Zapater. She is doing her PhD at the Translational Research in Cancer during Childhood and Adolescence group. Her goal is to find epigenetic therapies for two types of child cancer: neuroblastoma and ependimoma. http://www.faigrecerca.org/colabora-vhir-amics.php If you want to become Friend of VHIR, fill this form.
