08/05/2019 The Fundació Catalana de Lupus donates 70.000€ to VHIR for research 08/05/2019 This year the donations have been destined mainly to the hiring of Sandra Domingo Bover, a PhD student and to be able to finance her research project. On April 25, the Fundació Catalana de Lupus, a non-profit organization, presented a check for 70,000 euros to the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) to advance lupus research.Lupus is a serious disease of the immune system, of unknown cause, of uncertain and incurable evolution. The antibodies attack the organism itself instead of protecting it against external agents. In Spain there are approximately 45,000 affected and in Catalonia they are about 6,000, a figure higher than in other, much better known diseases. It is currently a treatable but incurable disease. It should be noted that it is a very complex disease where each patient is different, which makes translational research very difficult.During 2018, thanks to the organization of different solidarity sports events and the contributions received by the Foundation, it has been possible to collect the sum of 70,000 euros to be able to continue with lupus research. The main events that took place during 2018 were: The IV Carrera Cara Nord a Muntanyes de Prades, the III Caminata por el Lupus GR in Aiguafreda, the III Carrera Nocturna Castell del Remei, and the V Race Entre Vinyes del Vilosell. This year the donations have been destined mainly to the hiring of Sandra Domingo Bover, a doctoral student and to be able to finance her research project Discoid Lupus erythematosus: Study of the formation of atrophy and cicatricial lesions, and from which a publication has been derived one of the most relevant dermatology journals: https://www.jidonline.org/article/S0022-202X(18)32479-5/fulltext The Journal of Investigative Dermatology *. Sandra Domingo Bover is part of the Lupus Unit of the research group on Systemic Diseases of the VHIR.The Fundació Catalana de LupusThe Fundació Catalana de Lupus was created in 2008 with a social, educational and basic scientific research purpose of the disease. In order to carry out this project, the Foundation is formed mainly of patients affected in lupus, people in solidarity for the cause and, also, members specialized in lupus. *Solé C et al.
