II Workshop on diseases and psychosocial approach to asylum seeker and vulnerable immigrants

The aim is to improve the quality of healthcare activities, to establish flexible communication circuits between organizations and health centres and engage in health promotion.

On Thursday 6 April was held the Second Workshop on diseases and psychosocial approach to asylum seeker and vulnerable immigrants, organized by the Unit of Tropical Medicine and International Health in Drassanes of Vall d'Hebron (UMTSI) and the Catalan Institute of Health-PROSICS.For years, this unit, UMTSI, performs healthcare activities and for the promotion of health in vulnerable immigrant population and in late 2012 at the request of some hosting entities, created the project "From reflection to action: A intervention proposal for health promotion in schools and shelters for vulnerable immigrants."The aim of the project is to improve the quality of healthcare activities, to establish flexible communication circuits between organizations and health centres, and engage in health promotion based on the needs expressed by reception technicians and the immigrants themselves," says Núria Serre, from the Special Program of International Health of the Catalan Institute of Health-PROSICS and coordinator of the Workshop.As part of this project, it is included the making of this workshop for people working in any service of reception of migrants/vulnerable refugees, both public and private. The aim is to inform and sensitize workers centres and hosting organizations on the psychosocial approach and some diseases in vulnerable immigrants. The attendees also had the opportunity to share and exchange experiences.The conference dealt with the following topics:Mental Health in vulnerable immigrant population by doctors Francisco Collazos and Adil Qureshi, of transcultural psychiatry department at the Hospital Vall d'Hebron. Dr. Collazos spoke of the impact on the social context of mental health of immigrants and asylum seekers stressing the importance of awareness of professionals with social and cultural aspects for an optimal healthcare.International health relevant transmissible diseases by Núria Serre and Ines Oliveira from the Special international health program of the Catalan Institute of Health-PROSICS - Hospital Vall d'Hebron.Sexually transmitted infections by Maria Jesús Barbera, from the Sexual Transmitted Infections Unit of the Hospital Vall d'Hebron.International Community Health Interventions with vulnerable immigrant population by Hakima Ouaarab and Jordi Gómez from PROSICS/espic, Vall d'Hebron Hospital, who presented the RTA methodology (Research, Training and Action) seen the as the research to create an educational tool that allows to train equal educators, figures in the community who are able to train their equals in the use of this tool in the field of health promotion.Preventive activities for health technicians and reception educators carried out by Dr. Susana Otero from the Preventive Service of the Vall d'Hebron Hospital.European project MyHealth by Esperanza Esteban, Project Director of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR).
