La Marató de TV3 raises over 9.5M euros for research in neurodegenerative disorders

VHIR researchers participated in the 22nd edition of the telethon

The 22nd edition of the telethon "http://www.tv3.cat/marato/en/" 'La Marató de TV3', dedicated to neurodegenerative diseases, demonstrated the great generosity of the Catalan society, by raising over 9.5 million euros. Throughout Sunday, the Catalan public television offered testimonies from people affected by these pathologies, combined with entertainment and scientific dissemination, with the participation of neurologists and researchers from Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR). Dr. Francina Munell, researcher from the Pediatric Neurology group, participated on November 15 in the TV show 'Els Matins', coinciding with the Neuromuscular Awareness Day. She went with a patient who suffers one of these pathologies and talked about her evolution and the treatments available for her patients. On December 15, also participated in the telethon with their patients Dr. Xavier Montalban, director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Catalonia and head of the Clinical Neuroimmunology group, Dr. Josep Gámez, responsible of the Peripheral Nervous System and expert in ALS, and Dr. Mercè Boada, leader of the Alzheimer’s disease group. Finally, Dr. Oriol de Fabregues, responsible of the Parkinson's disease and Movement Disorders Unit at the hospital and researcher of the Neurodegenerative Diseases group, led by Dr. Miquel Vila, talked about Parkinson's disease.The aim of this edition was to advance towards scientific research in neurodegenerative diseases, in order to prevent and cure them in the future but, above all, to improve the quality of life of patients. La Marató closed with 9,550,109 euros collected, but the campaign to raise funds will be "http://www.tv3.cat/marato/en/donatius" open until the 31st of March.
