16/01/2013 Multiple Sclerosis Center of Catalonia opens the new building 16/01/2013 The new ground holds more than 1,800m2 dedicated to neurorehabilitation and health services for the patients The opening of the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Catalonia’s building (Cemcat), led by Dr. Xavier Montalban, from the Clinical Neuroimmunology Group at Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), represents a step forward in the continuous improvement of the diagnosis, treatment and research of Multiple Sclerosis. The new facilities, distributed in more than 1,800m2, let professionals working with the last technologies in spaces specifically designed to give more confort and quality to patients. Building Cemcat hosts more than 60 professionals.Cemcat provides services of neurology, nursing, neurorehabilitation, psychology, neuropsychology, physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and social work to achieve a neurological and functional recovery of patients. The center also has got a classroom for developing teaching activities.Cemcat is a worldwide pioneer center in clinical and basic research of multiple sclerosis. In 2012, participated in a monthly average of 20 international clinical trials and more than 100 patients participated every month in clinical trials. Cemcat’s research, done by the Clinical Neuroimmunology Group at VHIR, is focused on the diagnosis, treatment, mechanisms description and etiology, as well as in the epidemiology and symptomatic treatment. One of the most important research lines is the natural history of multiple sclerosis through the search of clinical, radiologic, and laboratory predictors after a first eruption of multiple sclerosis. In 2012, articles published by Cemcat got an impact factor of 300.Cemcat is a project shared by CatSalut, Institut Català de la Salut, Departament de Salut and Sclerosis Multiple Foundation (FEM).
