It is 15 years of continuous contributions to the investigation of this disease in the VHIR Peripheral Nervous System group.

La Murga de La Llagosta has delivered to the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) a check of 3,267.52 euros to promote research in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) carried out by the VHIR Peripheral Nervous System group, led by Dr. José Gámez. La Murga organized various activities last year to collect funds for this solidarity campaign, such as a popular paella. It is 15 years since a group of neighbors and "lifelong" friends from La Llagosta founded this association, La Murga, with the objective to raise funds for the investigation of minority diseases through the organization of recreational activities. Since then, and sensitized by two cases of ALS in their community, they have been making continuous contributions to the investigation of this disease in the VHIR Peripheral Nervous System group. The delivery ceremony was held in the Plenary Hall of the City Hall, with more than 100 attendees. The accidental mayor of La Llagosta, Concepción Jiménez, the councilor for Health, Mariano Garcia, and the one for Culture and Youth, Fran Ruiz, moderated delivery. On behalf of the Murga, José Monterrubio and Antonio Melgar presented Dr. Gámez with a check accrediting the amount collected.VHIR is a leading research center for ALS, a neurodegenerative disease caused by the death of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Currently, there is no drug capable of curing or stopping a disease of very rapid evolution, with a life expectancy for those who suffer less than five years. The researchers, who are part the Peripheral Nervous System research group and the Neurology Service of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, have more than twenty years of experience in the research and clinical care of ALS and other diseases such as myasthenia gravis, spinal muscular atrophy, genetically determined myopathies, or peripheral neuropathies.Among the research lines in which VHIR is currently working is the search for effective biomarkers in blood and cerebrospinal fluid to evaluate new candidate drugs for the treatment of ALS.
