Ona Futura Foundation has signed a donation agreement with the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) to contribute to research on various immune disorders related to the pregnancy process.

Ona Futura Foundation has signed an agreement with the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) to contribute to research on various immune disorders that are related to the pregnancy process. The euros40,000 donation will help fund a wide range of projects within this line of research, carried out by the Systemic Diseases research group of the VHIR, led by Dr. Jaume Alijotas-Reig.Among them are the study of the role of monocytes in pregnancy complications related to antiphospholipid antibodies, and another that studies the genetic and molecular bases and new diagnostic and risk stratification tools for the characterization of obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome, the seronegative or the catastrophic variant."The data that these projects can produce will allow us to improve our knowledge about the causes and immunological mechanisms that cause or facilitate maternal-fetal obstetric complications, particularly, implantation failures, recurrent embryo-fetal losses and those derived from inflammation/placental thrombosis. This will allow to take better action to prevent and treat these disorders, which are quite prevalent", according to Dr. Alijotas-Reig. "It will also serve to better plan pregnancies in those women who already have known autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome or rheumatoid arthritis".Present at the signing ceremony of the donation agreement were Dr. Inmaculada Farran, president of the Ona Futura Foundation, Dr. Joan X. Comella, director of the VHIR, and Dr. Jaume Alijotas-Reig, coordinator of Teaching and Research of the Internal Medicine Service of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and head of the Systemic Diseases research group of the VHIR.The collaboration will be active throughout 2021, with the chance of extending it for up to two more years, with the corresponding successive donations. Furthermore, the Ona Futura Foundation is recognized as a "Friend of Vall d'Hebron" entity. The Ona Futura Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is the protection and regeneration of the Mediterranean Sea, through the promotion of culture, education and research. "Not only acting on biological ecosystems, but also on the human ones. That includes health promotion", explains its president, Dr. Inmaculada Farran."Collaborating with biomedical research is very important for us, because in this way we diversify our range of projects directly related to human health, in this case, with that of women of childbearing age with immunological problems. We have found it appropriate to collaborate with the Systemic Diseases research group of the VHIR led by Dr. Alijotas-Reig, since we have been following him for years, and we know the preliminary results of his studies, characterized by their translationality", according to Dr. Farran."The collaborations between the VHIR and non-profit foundations, such as Ona Futura, help us to continue with our research", thanks Dr. Joan X. Comella.
