ACCU Catalunya has started a fundraising campaign through Yo Investigo

The association of patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in Catalonia (ACCU) has selected a project led by Dr. Francisco Guarner, from the Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Digestive Tract group at Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), to start the campaign “Give support to research”. In the study “Nutritional intervention with prebiotics and probiotics to enrich intestinal flora of patients with inflammatory bowel disease”, also participate Dr. Francesc Casellas and Dr. Natalia Borruel. With this initiative, the patients’ association wants to contribute actively to the progress of research in this field that VHIR leads with studies like MetaHIT, which concluded that patients with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis have a poor microbial system. Now, researchers want to determine whether the loss of bacteria is the cause or the consequence of the disease. To do that, they will enrich their diversity of microflora in the gut, using nutritional products (probiotics and prebiotics) which benefit the development and proliferation of non-aggressive bacteria. 20 patients will participate in this study, following a strict diet for one month and being under observation during one year. The cost of the project is 20,000 euros. All funds will be collected through VHIR’s donations site, "http://www.yoinvestigo.org/colabora-vhir-donacio.php?idioma=cs&id=75" www.yoinvestigo.org.
