VHIR Annual Report 2023.

The report includes the centre's scientific and institutional highlights for 2023.

Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) presents, once again, the annual report of the center, where the most relevant scientific and institutional results of 2023 are shared. It is presented this year in a digital format with a renewed design with images, videos and graphics that support the most important data and news of the year in a dynamic and attractive way.

The Annual Report opens with an editorial by Dr. Begoña Benito, director of VHIR, who highlights two institutional milestones of 2023. On the one hand, the reaccreditation as a CERCA center with a B+ rating, which indicates a high degree of scientific excellence and with a great recognition to the growth of the institution. On the other hand, the overcoming of the first phase of reaccreditation as a research institute by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III. Dr. Benito also emphasizes the progress of the works and the task in the organization of the spaces of the new building, which will be inaugurated in 2024 and will offer great opportunities to do better research and will favor group synergies.

The report includes the main facts and figures on scientific production, clinical trials, human resources, innovation, economic issues and the units that support research. It highlights the 1,574 scientific publications, 25.5% of which are in the first decile. In addition, 220 national and international competitive grants have been awarded and 266 new clinical studies have been launched, bringing the total number of active studies to 1,080, with special emphasis on trials in pediatrics and minority diseases.

The report includes narrative sections presenting two of the most important projects of the year: CERTERA, in the field of advanced therapies, and FORTALECE, in the field of chronic and minority diseases. It also explains the objectives and challenges of the Pediatric Research Hub to promote advances in the health of children and adolescents, and the research we have been carrying out in Angola for the last 15 years.

In addition, the report includes a summary of the activity of the research groups, organized according to their affiliation to the different eCORE.

Finally, there are also five videos of the most outstanding publications of the year as voted by the Internal Scientific Committee, and a summary of the most important news published during the year, both scientific and institutional.
