Mutual Mèdica presented its Research Grants and Awards in a ceremony in which the researcher Manuel Requena, from the VHIR Ictus research group, was awarded a second prize.

On Tuesday Mutual Mèdica presented its Research Grants and Awards in a ceremony in which the researcher Manuel Requena, of the Ictus research group of Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), was awarded a second prize by the work 'Predictors of Endovascular Treatment Among Stroke Codes Activated Within 6 Hours From Symptom Onset', published in Stroke Magazine. The work presented by Dr. Requena is based on the fact that activating the prehospital stroke code helps reduce triage time once the patient arrives at the hospital. The aim of the study was to "identify the predictors of endovascular treatment among stroke codes activated within 6 hours of the onset of symptoms," says the researcher. The Ictus Catalunya Code (CICAT) is an official and obligatory register of all stroke codes in Catalonia. "For 18 months, we studied all CICAT admissions at six hospital centers with endovascular treatment and all demographic, clinical, and imaging variables were recorded to explore the relationship between these variables and predictors of endovascular treatment." He says.Of the 3,944 stroke codes included in the study, 70% (2,778 cases) were admitted to the hospital within the first 6 hours of the onset of symptoms. The final diagnosis was ischemic stroke in 1,762 patients (63.4%), hemorrhagic stroke in 359 (13.0%), transient ischemic stroke in 164 (5.9%) and stroke mimics in 493 (17, 7%). Of all stroke codes, only 16%, that is, 444 people, received timely endovascular treatment.Different patient evaluation protocols and scales were analyzed, and the study concludes that "in cases of stroke code entry within 6 hours of the onset of symptoms, the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) at admission was the only independent factor associated with endovascular treatment," says Manuel Requena. This data can be useful to complement direct transfer protocols to the arteriography room, based mainly on clinical severity. Prizes for Medical Mutual Research 2019 This year's edition involved more than 200 works in the different categories. 136 works for the Dr. Source and 70 works for the Mutual Medical Scholarship. The second prize awarded to Dr. Requena belongs to the category Dr. Font.During the awards ceremony for the Mutual Medical Research Awards 2019, Dr. Ignacio Ferreira, head of the research group on Cardiovascular Diseases at VHIR and acting head of the Cardiology Service of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital with the presentation "Doctor and clinical research: a fertile union".
