Accounts for about 5% of all women's tumours, is the sixth most frequent and the fifth most common cause of death by cancer in women. The main problem in the fight against this disease is that it does not present symptoms as a guidance for doctors and patients to get a quick diagnosis. This causes that they are diagnose at an advanced stage in over 70% of cases and that the overall survival at 5 years is lower than 30%.Within the Group of Biomedical Research in Gynecology led by Dr. Antonio Gil, who is also the head of the Gynecology Service at the Hospital, Dr. Anna Santamaria and the rest of researchers develope lines of research to provide answers to the most important clinical needs related to ovarian cancer, such as the early diagnosis, the evolution of the disease, and its process of dissemination and the search for new therapies. In relation to treatment, Vall d'Hebron treats cases of gynecologic cancer at the Oncological Gynecology and Lower Genital Tract Pathology Unit, formed by 8 professionals who each year assist nearly 9,000 patients and perform a half thousand surgical interventions.
