For his valuable entrepreneurial and transfer experience in the treatment of human diseases with gene therapies

Dr. Miquel Chillón, Researcher ICREA and head of the http://en.vhir.org/portal1/grup-equip.asp?s=recerca&contentid=187147 Gene Therapy of the Nervous System research group at the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) received the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB)Transfer Award yesterday during the celebration of the first Night of the Social Council of the UAB. The event, entitled "Society and university: together, even further", consisted of a series of interviews with the winners and a debate on how to strengthen and improve the links between society and the university. They awards aimed to reflect the four pillars of the UAB Social Council: society, business and, for the first time, alumni and knowledge transfer. The winners in each of the four categories were: Dr. Miquel Chillón, with the UAB Transfer Award for his valuable entrepreneurial and transfer experience in the treatment of human diseases with gene therapies, a work materialised in the creation of the spin-offs NanoTherapix, SL, and Kogenix Therapeutics Inc., aimed at bringing the therapeutic product to the clinic and the market. Dr. Chillón is a professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and ICREA researcher at the INc-UAB and at the VHIR, where he is the head of the Gene Therapy at the Nervous System Research Group. Over his career in technology transfer activities, he is noted for holding 7 patents and for being the founder of two spin-offs. The first of them, Nanotherapix SL, created in Barcelona in 2009, develops genetics and cell therapy strategies for autoimmune diseases. The second one, Klogene Therapeutics Inc., was created in Boston in 2016 and focuses on the therapeutic potential of the Klotho protein for cognitive deficits and neurodegenerative diseases in humans. As far as transfer activity is concerned, of particular note is the creation of the Vectors Production Unit (UPV) at the UAB in 2004, which was the first Vector Core in Spain and is currently generating viral vectors for research groups and private industries in 10 different countries. The Barça Foundation, with the University-Society Award for its commitment and relevant role, through the values of sport, at the service of social development. For its willingness to make a more humane world through access to education and its reinforcement as a basic pillar in the development of children. For contributing to the social inclusion of children at risk of exclusion, to social innovation in order to respond to social problems, and to conflict resolution and the promotion of understanding between people.Banco Santander received the University-Industry Award for its long history and strong commitment, within the framework of its social responsibility, promoting higher education, both at national and international levels.Finally, filmmaker Carla Simón was granted the Alumni UAB Award as a former graduate in Audiovisual Communication at the UAB, for her valuable career as a young filmmaker and for her contribution, from the film perspective, to the culture of the country, projecting it both nationally and internationally, and with a clear and active contribution of women to the film industry.
