29/06/2011 Stroke and Chiari malformation focus the research projects of 'La Marató de TV3' awarded to VHIR 29/06/2011 Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) researchers have developed within the framework of the 12th Symposium of 'La Marató de TV3' Foundation three research projects with funds raised during 'La Marató' of 2005, dedicated to Alzheimer's and other brain diseases. VHIR and Vall d'Hebron University Hospital presented their lines of work and the results of research focused on stroke and Chiari malformation have received a fund of €584,600. At the conference have participated the researchers who have led the 35 selected scientific research projects and have received 7.72 million euros distributed by the Board of 'La Marató de TV3' Foundation.Dr. Joan Montaner, head the neurovascular diseases group at VHIR, has led the "Project Greco: genotyping risk of recurrent stroke", one of the neurovascular research works broader worldwide, with 1800 patients from the Catalan public hospital network, with the aim of identifying those who suffered a relapse.Dr. Gaietà Permanyer, member of VHIR's cardiocirculatory disease group, has led the second study focused on the stroke: "Evaluation of care of stroke in Catalonia after the implementation of an organized and integrated model to acute stroke".The team led by Dr. Alfons Macaya, leader of the pediatric neurology group at VHIR, has developed a study on "The genetic basis of Chiari Malformation Type I (MCI)", a congenital disease with a defect in the structure of the cranial posterior fossa causing multiple and progressive neurological symptoms.
