The SEPAR has awarded a grant to Dr. Antonio Soriano to study the spread of tuberculosis among immigrants' children.

The http://www.separ.es/" Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) has awarded its 2016 research grant for the project "Observational study of TB infection and the utility of Quantiferon-TB-Gold-in-Tube(R) on children who travel to countries with high incidence of tuberculosis ", lead by Dr. Antonio Soriano, researcher of the Infection in immunosuppressed paediatric patients group at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR).The grant, endowed with 18,000 euros, will allow to determine the incidence and factors associated with tuberculosis infection in children under 15 who are children of immigrants and family travelling to countries with a high incidence of the disease. The study will be conducted in a cohort of 330 children followed at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Hospital Mútua Terrassa, the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, the CAP Drassanes and the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu.Dr. Soriano expects to detect differences of 4% in the incidence of the disease before and after the trip. To determine this, tuberculin will be measured before and after the trip, and it will be confirmed using the technique Quantiferon-TB Gold-in-Tube(R). Likewise, will also collected data on age, sex, country and travel time, vaccination, and if the patient is passive smoker, in order to identify factors associated with the infection.
