06/06/2011 Symposium: ‘Mechanisms of synaptic dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders’ 06/06/2011 When: Barcelona 8 / 9 JulyWhere: Sala d’actes del Pavelló Docent de l’Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron, Barcelona "http://www.brainc.eu/" www.brainc.eu "www.brainc.eu" During the last decade, knowledge on the mechanisms of synapse formation, dynamics, remodeling and strength has advanced enormously, providing further evidence that activity-dependent regulation of synapse efficacy underlies cognitive functions such as learning and memory. In addition, accumulating evidence indicates that alterations in the function of excitatory synapses underlie cognitive deficits in patients with neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.In this symposium, we intend to encompass the most relevant advances made in the field of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate synapse function and plasticity with the aim to identify the processes that cause synapse damage in neurodegenerative diseases. Another objective of this symposium is to discuss and recognize the still unanswered key questions that future research will address to ascertain the synaptic mechanisms that are altered in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.Scheduled presentations will provide an overview of the most recent advances. Sessions include: studies on signal transduction, synapse formation, and strength, new findings on the influence of synaptic scaffolds in the regulation of synaptic function, and, recently identified mechanisms that alter synapse dynamics and receptor trafficking in neurodegenerative disorders.We look forward to welcoming you to this symposium and wish that you enjoy a fruitful and friendly scientific atmosphere.
