Vall d'Hebron organizes 'Ventilung', the first basic course in mechanical ventilation

Ventilung, a course on basics of artificial ventilation and its main clinical applications, will be held at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (HUVH) from 24 to 26 February, is co-organized by three groups of CIBER of Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES)-belonging to the Instituto de Salud Carlos III- led by Jordi Rello, head of the ICU department at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital (HUVH) and responsible of the Intensive Medicine group at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR),, Ferran Morell, head of Pneumology department at HUVH and responsible of Pneumology group at VHIR, and Joaquim Gea, head of Pneumology department at Hospital del Mar.Jordi Rello, coordinator of the course in which participate 17 internationally renowned experts, indicates that "it is new to offer a new teaching program that aims at improving basic training professionals interested in serious respiratory failure". For its part, Joan Ramon Masclans, vice president of the Teaching Commission of HUVH, also member of Intensive medicine group at VHIR and course coordinator, says that "patients will benefit, no doubt, of the teacher collaboration from excellent specialists of CIBERES". On 24 February the course will focus on basic pulmonary ventilation. On Friday 25 will review new ventilatory modes and will present case studies of how to ventilate patients with different diseases. On Saturday 26 there will be simulations of case studies in small groups, with the collaboration of Covidien, Drager, Fisher, Maquet, MC, Philips and Portex. The meeting will conclude with a panel discussion on quality of life, involving an intensivist (Oriol Roca), nurse (E. Gallant) and family of a patient with cystic fibrosis.The course, aimed at professionals in health sciences interested in the treatment of mechanically ventilated patients, is accredited by the Catalan Council for Continuing Medical training and the Commission of Continuing training of the National Health System (3.3 credits).
