With this center we are laying the foundations to be a leading center in Angola and achieve further progress in research for the benefit of the local population.

Today the Health Research Centre (Pesquisa me Saúde) in Cubal (Angola) was inaugurated, as a result of the collaboration between the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) and the Katyavla Bwila University. The event is part of the VIII Scientific Conference of the Nossa Senhora da Paz Hospital in Cubal and was attended by different national and local authorities and Dr. Israel Molina, representing Vall d'Hebron and as director of the Scientific Committee of the new research centre. The event was attended by H.E. Dr. María Do Rosário Braganza, Minister of Higher Education of Angola, Dr. Albano, Magnificent Rector of the Katiavala Buil University of Benguela, Dr. Paula Oliveira, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, among others. The Vall d'Hebron Campus was represented by Dr. Israel Molina, coordinator of the Tropical Medicine and International Health Unit of Vall d'Hebron and principal investigator of the infectious diseases group of the VHIR. Through a Skype connection, Dr. Joan X. Comella, director of VHIR and Dr. Benito Almirante, head of the Infectious Diseases Service of Vall d'Hebron, have intervened. Today, a dream that began more than 10 years ago with the help of Dr. Molina and the Infectious Diseases Service in the form of a collaboration project with the Nossa Senhora da Paz Hospital in Cubal is coming true. "During these years we have been working on the research of very prevalent diseases in Angola and in Cubal, specifically, tuberculosis, schistosomiasis, geohelmintiasis and malaria", says Dr. Almirante. And now, "with the creation of the Centro de Pesquisa me Saúde of the Katyavla Bwila University, we are laying the foundations to be a leading centre in the country and to make further progress in the search, opting for a greater number of projects, obtaining more funding and helping in the training of local staff in Angola". says Dr. Molina. Both Dr. Molina and his team and Vall d'Hebron continued to provide logistical support and advice to this project. "We are convinced that over time we will encourage the exchange of personnel, the centre will welcome international researchers and thus become an international reference centre for infectious diseases", concludes Dr. Comella
