A total of 67 research projects have applied to the Innovation Contest in Health

In the Catalan hospitals and research centers there are a lot of innovative ideas, but frequently don’t go any further just because their professionals are not trained in techniques of knowledge transfer. This is the point that defends the responsible of the Knowledge Transfer and Innovation Unit at Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), Raquel Egea, in order to explain why the knowledge transfer is still poor among the Catalan hospitals and biomedical research centers, compared to other sectors and regions. According to the data provided by the Spanish organization of patents and brands (OEPM) "http://blogs.iec.cat/observatori/2015/03/10/les-sol%C2%B7licituds-catalanes-de-patents-estatals-han-baixat-un-319-en-el-periode-2008-2014/" , the applications for patents decreased by 30% in Catalonia in the last 7 years and positions the region behind others such as Madrid and Andalusia. However, if you take a look at the bibliometric indicators, "http://bac.fundaciorecerca.cat/mb11" Catalonia is leader in terms of visibility, excellence and cooperation in the field of biomedical research, according to a study by the Research Group on Bibliometrics. With the aim to encourage health professionals to turn their ideas into solutions, VHIR opened to all Catalan research centers and hospitals the 2nd edition of the Innovation Contest in Health. And the response was very positive because among the applicants, there are projects from Hospital Clínic, Hospital de Bellvitge, Hospital de Sant Pau, Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, Hospital Josep Trueta, Hospital Joan XXIII, Hospital Parc Taulí, Vall d’Hebron Institut d’Oncologia (VHIO), Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), l’Institut d’Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL), IDIAP Jordi Gol and Institut de Recerca Biomèdica de Lleida (IRB Lleida).According to the responsible of innovation at VHIR, “the high number of applications is a success that demonstrates that hospitals and biomedical research centers have a large potential in innovation”. Now all the projects submitted are being evaluated and on May 11 will be published the finalists that will receive training in the field of knowledge transfer and innovation.Specifically, finalists will receive lessons to write a feasibility report, to know the details of the valuation process and the possibilities of funding for their projects. This training will be carried out by experts from Connecting Perspectives, Inveready, Trifermed and Barcelona Institut d’Emprenedoria. In addition, each participant will have tuition by an expert in innovation. The Innovation Contest is an initiative created by Vall d´Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) in collaboration with ACCIÓ and ROCHE Diagnostics, which aims to promote the innovation that comes from hospitals and their associated research centers. With this initiative, Raquel Egea assures that “companies and investors will mark Catalan hospitals and research centers in the map of the innovation international cutting edge research”. In fact, some of the participants of the contest’s last edition have already transferred the project to the company, have signed co-development collaborations or have received funding from competitive calls.
