The biotechnology company will provide services of metabolomics and lipidomics

Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) and the biotechnology company OWL have signed an agreement to provide services of metabolomics and lipidomics to VHIR research groups, in order to increase their analysis capacity and the search of new biomarkers for a wide range of disorders. Metabolomics is the study of little molecules called metabolites, which are present in the biological system. Metabolic profiles represent nowadays one of the main strategies in this field. The comparison between different phenotypes is used to identify metabolic changes that help us to know the physiology, toxicology and how the disorder is developed. OWL holds a powerful platform to detect metabolites fundamentally lipids, so VHIR researchers could increase their possibilities to discover new biomarkers and advance in personalized medicine studies. From now on, clinical and preclinical researchers at Vall d’Hebron can know in detail the phenotype associated with many disorders in patients and animal models, and can also analyze, compare and even predict their answer to a drug. For VHIR’s director, Dr. Comella, “researchers could deal with projects more ambitious and widen our research field to keep on searching solutions for people’s health problems”. On the other hand, Dr. Azucena Castro, OWL’s general director, assures that “Vall d’Hebron is a reference center in biomedical research and for OWL will be a challenge to provide metabolomics services with high quality requirements. For that reason, OWL has a multidisciplinary and expert staff and one of the most important technology platforms in Europe. Without any doubt, the value added of metabolomics will contribute to complement the research done at VHIR”.
