Two Catalan schools participated in the activity led by Dr. Àlex Sànchez

Coinciding with the "http://setmanaciencia.fundaciorecerca.cat/" "http://setmanaciencia.fundaciorecerca.cat/" Science Week and the "http://www.statistics2013.org/" "http://www.statistics2013.org/" International Year of Statistics, two Catalan schools -Col·legi Claret and Institut Rambla Prim-, participated in the interactive workshop to test the latest techniques of statistics applied to molecular biology at Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR).Students experienced the biomedical research of the 21st century, which is far away from pipettes and white coats, thanks to the didactic lesson taught by Àlex Sànchez, professor from the Statistics Department at Universitat de Barcelona, and head of the Statistics and Bioinformatics unit at VHIR. With just a computer, students guessed the genetic disorder associated to an unknown nucleotide sequence, by decoding its gene. Besides, they could also learn about the human genome, the 3D structures of proteins and the genetic features of several diseases. After the activity, students visited the facilities of the Institute, with a guided tour led by the responsibles of the unit of Lab Coordination at VHIR, in order to discover what, how and why researchers investigate in a biomedical research center located in a hospital.
